Pure SpinCamp

“My strength is as the strength of ten because my heart is pure.”
-Lord Tennyson
Today is going to be an awesome day! Friday's always are one of my favorite days to get a strong workout and get ready for a weekend. It has been a long, trying and emotional week, looking forward to wrapping it up and regaining some calm. Join me today and let's work it out!

  • burpees
  • Clean and press
  • Push ups, hand release...
  • Jumping Lunges (aka, Alternating Split Squats)
  • Dumbbell Thruster (35/25 lbs.)
You will cycle through the exercises, spending 60 seconds at each – the clock does not stop as you transition from one exercise to the next.  After you have completed the fifth station, rest 60 seconds...  Repeat for a total of three rounds.

“And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.” Ronald Dahl

Cupcake Workout!

When you speak the truth, have one foot in the stirrup.
-John Wayne
Well, not exactly! There are so many misconceptions about how exercise, food and fitness change the way you look.  Going to the gym, taking a group fitness class, going on a run, or a walk is awesome, but, it's more about the type of activity and the intensity of that activity that will change your fitness level and help reach your goals. Those that weigh more, need more fuel, so they use more calories.  In my experience many people think they burn way more than they actually do and this common misconception can keep their fitness goals at bay.  Truth be told, you might not be burning as many calories as you assume and this can put a halt to weight loss. Did you know that a 135 pound woman burns about:

55 calories per hour sleeping
60 calories per hour sitting
75 calories per hour waiting in line
90 calories per hour typing or doing light office work
120 calories per hour driving
125 calories per hour cooking
140 calories per hour shopping
(note: just 8 hours of sleeping and 8 hours of sitting adds up to 920 calories burned)

Of course, the calories burned per hour exercising are much greater:
150 per hour doing hatha yoga
300 per hour walking at 4 mph
450 per hour on the elliptical
500 per hour intense circuit training
600 per hour swimming laps

If you want to look like an a fit athlete, you need to train like an athlete.  How does one train like an athlete you may be wondering.  For one, athletes and people with lean, athletic, healthy builds, don’t simply go on the same run everyday and expect to keep losing weight.  Cross-training is the key to success, along with high-intensity interval training. (HIIT)
Look at the whole picture:
  • calorie needs. You can use an online calculator which takes into account your activity level.
  • Know how much you are eating. Do you know how many calories you are actually eating?  Most of us underestimate how much we are eating and few hundred calories here and there can add up.  Keep a food record.  I love www.livestrong.org
Know how much you are burning. Don’t rely on those gym machines either – many of the overestimate how many you are burning.  How many calories you burn during exercise depends on many factors such as weight, gender, muscle mass and intensity.
SO, Get MOVING! EAT CLEAN AND STAY ON TRACK!

  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Blend the spinach, basil, pine nuts, Parmesan cheese, garlic, salt, pepper, lemon juice, lemon zest, and 2 tablespoons olive oil in a food processor until nearly smooth, scraping the sides of the bowl with a spatula as necessary. Drizzle the remaining olive oil into the mixture while processing until smooth.
I made some today, spread it on my chicken before I baked it...yummy! I also froze some in small portion ziplock bags for later. BTW, I left off the Parmesan cheese this time.

Hero Workout!

“Does a hero know she’s a hero if no one tells her? Do you know a hero no one else knows? A hero doesn’t have to save a busload of school kids from certain disaster. Or score the winning point in the big game. A hero can be anyone who inspires you, anyone you look up to, anyone who cheers you on, makes you better than you were before – just as they made themselves better than they were before. Do you know a hero? Tell her. Then tell everyone.” – Nike

I have a hero, she is one of the kindest, sincere, loving and generous people I know.  I can call her anytime of the day and she's there for me. She is my fitness superhero! I covet her beautiful arms and laugh at her when she covers them up.   I have another hero, she lives way too far away from me, but, she's my sister from another mother.  She is the best decorator and I know, she taught me how to fluff my house before a party.  Every time I see her it's like we never left.  I have another hero, she's each of my 3 sisters. They teach me, inspire me, love me and make me want to be a better big sister and leader. I have another hero who is also my mom. She is the most beautiful and strong woman I know. She knows every fold in my heart and loves me unconditionally.  She taught me how to be the mother I am and I know that she is proud of how I love my children.  I have another hero, he is my SUPERhero! I can't believe I am lucky enough to be his wife.  He leads my family with integrity, humor and the strongest love I have known.

I am so lucky to have so many heros.  They keep me real, keep me grounded, inspire me and make me better.

...who are yours...tell them!

I would love to read your comments below.

Nutrition Tip of the Day!
DON'T DRINK YOUR CALORIES, especially JUICE. No orange juice, no grape juice, no pomegranate juice, no anything juice. If you want juice, eat the fruit or squeeze it yourself. Juice or liquid calories are some of the most processed foods you can eat. Straight sugar to the blood and thus, an enormous insulin spike. Not good.

Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.
-Mark Twain
Can you help someone feel that they too can become great? do it today!

Is it real Food? and today's BootCamp!

I’d rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I’d rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are.

"Grocery shopping has never been more confusing than it is in 2011.
With conflicting nutrition information coming at us from all sides, navigating the supermarket can feel as impossible as doing long division while juggling loaded bear traps. It's neither fun nor safe.
To help you find real food within the endless labyrinth of junk, I've put together this handy flowchart for your use and amusement. Consider it your supermarket GPS. If you ever get lost, just start back at the top.
Alternatively you can just ditch the supermarket altogether and head to the local farmers Market like I do.
Please feel free to share this with friends"
May the food be with you.

DETOXXX time!

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

hey to all, I hope that you have enjoyed the last week of presents, parties, mistletoe and junky food! It's time to step off the chuckwagon! I always try to think of my fitness and nutrition to be one of an effort to maintain balance.  I definitely love to have fun, go to dinner and host parties where I serve some fun and not so healthy food.  But, what makes the difference is that in our home, we try to balance that out with maintaining our workouts and keeping our fridge stocked with real and whole foods.  So, we never really step too far away from what is good for us. SO, what can you do TODAY to stay in balance? Here's where I would start:

MOVE every day! I am a gym rat and love going to group fitness classes, but, you don't have to! WALK, RUN, BIKE...do something today to elevate your heart rate and  keep it there for at least 30 minutes. NO, housework doesn't count.

KEEP a food journal...not all the time, unless accountability is something you really require. I keep a journal when it's time for me to have a reality check with myself. I love the website from Livestrong.com                 http://www.livestrong.com/thedailyplate/

FIND a fitness buddy! my favorite way to stay focused is to have my fitness friends keep me on track.  We meet at the gym, we talk fitness, we share recipes and we keep it real.  Find someone who you trust, who won't sabotage or derail you.  The more you surround yourself with people who support your goals, the greater your chance of success will be. Fitness loves company, whether it's a running buddy, a spotter in the weight room, or a pal to bolster your courage as you tackle that first yoga class.

Experts say buddying up can make your workout easier to stick with and harder to miss.

EAT real, clean food! stay away from processed, packaged, salted, sugared junk!
"Clean eating"is a way of life, not a diet. Clean foods are natural, free of added sugars, hydrogenated fats, trans-fats and anything else that is unnatural and unnecessary...and most important they taste good! Your body will learn to appreciate and crave real foods.

TONIGHT'S WORKOUT!

10 Dbell/Kbell Renegade Man Makers

5 Dbell/Kbell Renegade Man Makers
30 Box Jumps
one set of lampost suicide runs
.............................................................................................................
Man Maker # – Dbell or Kbell go AHAP (as heavy as possible)
Guys should be around 35-45
Girls should be around 20 to 25 pounds

Go heavier if you can. Good strength movement.
here is an awesome description on how to correctly do a manmaker...
.How to do a manmaker....
Man Maker... The man maker takes the basic push up and adds a variety of progressively challenging elements. The man maker addresses strength, balance, coordination and mid line stability in one movement.

Start by standing with a dbell in each hand and drop into the plank position with one dumbbell in each hand. Ensure you maintain a solid plank position and engage your abdominal muscles. Execute a full range of motion push up by lowering your chest to the floor. Press away from the floor and return to the plank position by fully extending your elbows.
Now that you have returned to the plank position, pull one dumbbell up to your chest (rowing motion) and return it to the floor. Repeat by pulling the other dumbbell to the chest then thrust both feet forward toward hands (as if performing a burpee) and complete a squat clean bringing the dbells up to the catch/rack position (at shoulders) then press both dbells overhead. We will be adding 2 standing lunges. This is one rep. The man maker requires a lot of abdominal and shoulder stability and balance especially during the movement.

Abdominal strength – Complete 100 knees to elbows after the workout. Each time you have to drop the bar, roll over and do 20 pushups

"As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others."

'Tis the Season...

TIS THE SEASON TO.NOT.STOP.WORKING.OUT!

I know you are thinking it is the holiday season, tomorrow is the first of December.  Studies show that half of all those polled experienced heightened stress  during the holidays. Perhaps one of the best ways to overcome stress during the holidays or any other time is to exercise regularly. Research shows that physical activity not only boosts your fitness and energy levels but can also elevate your moods.

Remember to keep exercise as a part of your daily routine. Try to exercise an hour a day, four to five days per week.Taking a brisk walk, bike ride, or exercise class will burn calories, release endorphins, and elevate your mood. Do something that you LOVE! If you love indoor cycle, don't miss your favorite classes this month...your instructor will thank you! Did you know that you are less likely to overeat when you exercise. Be extra sure to stay active EVERY day. Enjoy your holiday season without the stress of falling off track. You will feel so much better, you will have energy and you will SHINE!

I'm Out of Here!

Thank God every morning when you get up that you have something to do which must be done, whether you like it or not. Being forced to work, and forced to do your best, will breed in you temperance, self-control, diligence, strength of will, content, and a hundred other virtues which the idle never know.

How’s your nutrition this week? Are you getting the results that you want? Are you reaching your goal?
how wonderful!
One of my favorite things to do is grow a little garden, it is small, but, I love it.  My children help me pick out the plants.  We go to the nursery and decide what to grow for the summer season and we plant together. We work on weeding, watering and upkeep.  This year, we planted sweet potatoes, having no clue how it was going to turn out! Imagine our excitement when these GIANT sweet potatoes started poking out of the ground this fall! So, I am on a mad hunt for recipes that I can use these amazing sweet root vegetables.
Did you know sweet potatoes are high in antioxidants?
Did you know that it is an excellent source of vitamin A (in the form of beta-carotene), a very good source of vitamin C and manganese, and a good source of copper, dietary fiber, vitamin B6, potassium and iron.
Sweet potato, baked, with skin has 95.39 calories!

Form Matters

The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will. --Vince Lombardi

When you are doing your workouts, are you paying attention to your form? One of the hardest parts about leading group fitness classes is that I can't be everywhere at once...I try so hard to keep you in line, keep your knees back, keep your back straight, keep full range of motion.  BUT, ultimately, its up to you to be more aware of what you are doing during during your workouts. Pay close attention to the descriptions of the exercises. It's okay to perform the movements slowly if you need to in order to get them right — it's better than doing them inaccurately. Try not to use momentum or leverage to complete the moves — you'll only be cheating yourself. It is also better to use lighter weight and do the move right than to load up your bar and do it wrong.  Poor form can significantly hamper the results that you obtain from your weight workout, and it can also increase your chances of injury.  STAY INJURY FREE! If you want results, follow the rules and one of those rules is to use proper form!
Play Hard and stay smart with your workouts...

WARMUP....tabata pushups and tabata squats...I will be looking for perfect form....pushups..chest TO THE GROUND, squats...deep, hips deep, knees behind toes....

How clean are you??

How has your nutrition been this week? Are you getting the results that you would like to get? Stronger, leaner and faster recovery time after workouts? Do you know the importance of the post workout meal? Have you had more than one cheat meal so far this week? Remember its ok to have a cheat MEAL...cheat DAYS can turn into a 5,000 calorie feast that will derail you!

Diet is 80% of the battle:

If your diet is well balanced you will not only feel better you will perform better, and recover faster. Many of us have taken on the idea of CLEAN EATING.  Remember the basic guideline to follow when making food choices: eat real, whole foods, shop at local Farmers Markets and vegetable stands. Avoid buying or eating foods that are prepackaged or processed.  Keep intake to levels that will support exercise, but not body fat.  Clean eating is based on the idea that the best way to eat is to abundantly enjoy whole foods -- that is, foods as close to their natural state as you can get them. This means eating fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins instead of pre-packaged, processed foods or fast food. Clean eating is also committed to replacing saturated fats with healthy fats.  So, in evaluating your nutrition, how clean are YOU? What are you doing to move in that direction? I would love to read your comments below!

Sugar Sugar!
by Kerry Kraynak, RN, BSN

Facts about carbs...the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Over the dietary decades, we've seen all sorts of trends. For many years the huge fad was "fat free". This led to the use of all sorts of chemical food replacements, and overall an increase in sugar and their sweet counterparts (like high fructose corn syrup) to make convenience food fat free and more palatable. We were a carb nation, and our bodies learned to crave sugar in a whole new way. As the nation became fatter, the low-carb craze began. Suddenly everyone was afraid to eat carbs, and people became worried about not only bread, pasta, and potatoes, but fruits and sometimes even vegetables caused concern. The result has been utter confusion, a country where folks just don't know what to eat anymore. So they bounce from one fad diet to the next until desperate hunger and the crazy pace of life forces them back to the drive thru. Today we're going to discuss the truth about carbs, and how they fit into a clean eating diet plan.

why your body needs carbohydrates

Sugar (glucose) is a main source of energy for the brain and cells that make up your muscles and other tissues. Glucose comes from two major sources: carbohydrates in food and extra stores in your liver. Carbohydrates come in the form of sugar, starch and fiber. After you eat or drink something with carbs, your body breaks down each type of carbohydrate in essentially the same way, converting it into sugar — except for fiber, which passes through your body undigested. The sugar then enters your bloodstream. From there, it enters individual cells throughout your body to provide energy. Extra sugar is stored in your liver and muscles in a form called glycogen.

Two hormones from your pancreas help regulate the level of blood sugar. The hormone insulin moves sugar from your blood into your cells when your blood sugar level is high. The hormone glucagon helps release the sugar stored in your liver when your blood sugar level is low. This process helps keep your body fueled and ensures a natural balance in blood sugar.

all carbs are not created equal

Some carbohydrate rich food is thought to disrupt this natural balance by creating large spikes in your blood sugar level. When your blood sugar and insulin levels stay high, or cycle up and down rapidly, your body has trouble responding and over time you may develop insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is associated with a host of health problems, including:

Type 2 diabetes

Obesity

High blood pressure

Stroke

Heart disease

Researchers discovered a way to measure how quickly certain foods are broken down into glucose and enter the bloodstream. This is called the glycemic index, or GI.

Foods ranked by the glycemic index are given scores:

Items with low glycemic index rankings are digested more slowly, raising blood sugar in a more regulated and gradual way.

Because low GI foods are absorbed more slowly, they stay in your digestive tract longer. This may help control appetite and delay hunger cues, which can help with weight management. Balanced blood sugar also can also help reduce the risk of insulin resistance.

Here are some examples of common foods and their GI index:

High:
70 and up:
 instant white rice,
 brown rice,
plain white bread,
white skinless baked potato,
boiled red potatoes with skin,
watermelon,
pumpkin,
 french fries,
 bagels,
cheerios

Medium:
56-69:
sweet corn,
bananas,
raw pineapple,
raisins,
popcorn,
oatmeal,
couscous,
 blueberries,
greek pita,
barley,
mango

Low:
55 and under:
most vegetables and fruits,
nuts,
 skim milk,
beans and lentils,
al dente pasta,
peas,
tomatoes,
dried apricots,
 pears,
yogurt,
lentils,
soybeans

Proteins and fat sources are not given a GI because they have little to no effect on blood sugar. ,For a complete list of foods and their GI , here is a database to reference:

Not the whole story, of course!

So it would be pretty great if we could just select foods from the low glycemic index list and be guaranteed stable blood sugars and weight loss. But it's not that simple. The AMOUNT of carbohydrate that a certain food provides makes a difference. For example, the glycemic index of watermelon (a healthy food) is 72, which makes it a high GI food. But the total amount of carbohydrate eaten per serving is still LOWER than that of a carbohydrate dense, low GI food (like pasta which has a low GI of 42 but carries a large amount of carbohydrate per serving). This measure of glycemic index vs. total carbs per serving is referred to as GLYCEMIC LOAD. here is a handy table to help explain this better:

http://www.mendosa.com/common_foods.htm

Here's another example to make this concept clear:

Let’s take a single apple as an example. It has a GI of 40 and it contains 15 grams of carbohydrate.
GL = 40 x 15/100 = 6 g

What about a small baked potato? Its GI is 80 and it contains 15 g of carbohydrate.
GL = 80 x 15/100 = 12 g

So we can predict that our potato will have twice the metabolic effect of an apple. You can think of GL as the amount of carbohydrate in a food ‘adjusted’ for its glycemic potency.

SO WHAT SHALL WE EAT???

Overall, the focus should be on clean , whole unprocessed foods. In terms of carbs specifically, one must not rule out nutritious foods based on their glycemic load or glycemic index. The best time to eat higher glycemic load carbs is immediately after exercise (best combined with a protein) to aid in replenishing blood sugar and glycogen stores.

Pre-workout, however, it's great to have a low to med GI carb so the plasma glucose doesn't peak and fall too quickly during the workout. Talking a bit more food specific, pasta often gets a bad rap, but is actually a low glycemic index food when cooked "al dente". When the serving size is kept to 1 c and mixed with plenty of vegetables and protein, pasta is an excellent choice.

Is it Ok to eat high GI foods like potatoes and bread? Yes, in moderation. If you combine these foods with lower GI foods , fats, or proteins, it slows the absorbtion of the sugars to help you avoid spikes.

In summary, keep your focus on whole grain, whole food sources, and educate yourself about the GI of your favorite foods for better blood sugar stability.

Round 2 = Lateral Jumps / DB Swings (8 minutes)

Each round is 8 minutes of tabatas (20 sec work, 10 sec rest). Mash-up means you go back and forth between the two exercises, so round 1 would be thrusters, situps, thrusters, situps, etc. until youve done 8 sets of each. There is no rest between rounds; total 16 minute workout. Workout will be scored by total # of reps.

Run, Forrest, Run!
This is a partner WOD. One person will begin with box jumps while the other begins the 400m run. Player 1 will do as many box jumps as possible till the other person gets back from the run, then the players switch. Your rep count is continuous through the entire workout and it is for time also. Your score is your time and your total reps..
